When singing feels scary
Singing can feel very exposing. You can "hide" behind an instrument. But when you sing, there's nothing between you and the sound. It's just you. You are the instrument. Your whole being, including the sleepless night, or the hockey match where you cheered so loudly you lost your voice.
For some singers, that vulnerability is exhilarating. For others, it's unsettling. Even frightening.
I've worked with many singers who love singing but feel anxious about being heard. They worry about getting it wrong. They brace themselves for criticism. They apologise before they've even started.
That reaction makes sense. The voice is personal. It carries more than just lyrics, pitch and rhythm. It carries emotion, identity, and confidence. When someone comments on your singing, it can feel as though they're commenting on you.
Singing lessons offer a safe space. Mistakes are inevitable and even welcome, just as much as successes are. You can experiment. You can try things out. You don't have to prove anything. Nerves are acknowledged rather than dismissed. And gradually, confidence will grow.
