Common worries
When a child starts singing lessons, parents sometimes arrive with a quiet list of worries.
Is my child good enough?
Are they taking this seriously?
Should they be practising more?
How do they compare to others?
Sometimes the worries are spoken aloud. Sometimes they sit just beneath the surface.
What I like to see is a young person who enjoys singing. Who is trying. Who is navigating confidence, self-consciousness, tiredness, friendships, school pressure - and still turning up to sing.
I'm looking for curiosity and a spark of interest. Singing will become more familiar, technique will settle, confidence will grow.
Every singer and every voice is different and developing in completely different ways, each on their own timeline.
What I want to see, more than anything else, is joy. Joy keeps a singer engaged. Engagement leads to growth. And with the right support each singer can grow into their own potential.
